Uniting two distinct but complementary approaches to modern raw black metal, Shadow Under a Ravens Wing is a conceptual split LP between American entities Ascalapha and Ithilrå. Centered around occult folklore, superstition, and misfortune, the release stands as a cohesive masterclass in underground sonic extremity.

Ascalapha’s contributions fuse hurricane-force riffing and gruff vocals with unexpected gothic flourishes and theatrical visual kei influences, constructing cold, towering soundscapes. In contrast, Ithilrå plunges into even rawer territory, interweaving blistering, frostbitten aggression with nocturnal atmospheres, howling wolves, and shattered, euphoric melodies.

Together, the two acts forge an intensely atmospheric saga deeply rooted in a primitive, lo-fi aesthetic. Rather than presenting a disjointed collection of tracks, the split offers a desolate, evocative listening experience that naturally invites the mind to wander through ancient curses and moonlit, forgotten forests.
